In a statement, Baidu claims that X1 has similar performances to Deepseek R1, but at a lower cost. For businesses and developers, this means that X1 will be available at a price about 50% lower than Deepseek R1. The news is that X1 will be integrated into Baidu’s free chatbot and other apps within the group, including the Baidu Search engine.
In addition to the release of X1, Baidu has also rolled out Ernie 4.5, an improved version of its original AI model. As it appears, Baidu has accelerated the presentation of both updates, which were expected to be released on April 1st. The company was one of the first Chinese companies to publicly launch a generative AI platform in 2023.
Given its rapid growth, Baidu is facing fierce competition in the sector, with startups like Deepseek shaking the market with the release of a model, R1, with performances comparable to those of competitors like ChatGPT but at a lower development cost. Just recently, the Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba released R1-Omni, a model capable of reading human emotions, analyzing facial expressions in videos.
