La cerimonia dei premi di Mtv si è svolta in diverse location all’aperto di New York per far fronte alla pandemia. Grande protagonista della serata Lady Gaga con le sue vittorie e le sue mascherine
In un momento estremamente delicato per il mondo dello spettacolo e soprattutto per le manifestazioni dal vivo, Mtv ha deciso di organizzare ugualmente i suoi Video Music Awards, uno degli eventi più importanti della scena musicale americana e internazionale. Per far fronte all’emergenza legata al coronavirus, lo show ha rinunciato alla sua location indoor, inizialmente prevista al Barclays Center di New York, preferendo diversi luoghi all’aperto disseminati per la città, fra cui lo zoo del Bronx. A condurre l’attrice e cantante Keke Palmer, che ha lanciato i video delle varie esibizioni e delle varie premiazioni, svoltesi appunto in vari punti di New York oppure direttamente dalla casa degli artisti.
Fra le performance della serata si sono viste quelle di The Weeknd (che ha aperto la cerimonia e ha poi vinto il prestigioso Video of the year), Black Eyed Peas, Miley Cyrus (che ha cantato la nuova Midnight Sky su di una palla da discoteca, autocitando il suo celebre video Wrecking Ball), i coreani Bts vincitori di quattro premi e i Black Eyed Peas. Regina incontrastata della serata, però, è stata sicuramente Lady Gaga: non solo si è esibita con il suo brano Rain on Me assieme ad Ariana Grande, ma si è aggiudicata cinque riconoscimenti fra cui l’inedito TriCon Award che premia gli artisti impegnati su più fronti multimediali; inoltre ha cambiato diversi outfit, ognuno dotato di apposita e stravagante mascherina, a sottolineare l‘importanza della prevenzione: “Solo perché ora siamo separati e la cultura può sembrare meno viva, sento che sta per arrivare un nuovo rinascimento“, ha dichiarato.

La premiazione, che si è aperta con un tributo al compianto Chadwick Boseman e ha visto anche un omaggio ai tanti operatori medici e sanitari impegnati contro la pandemia, ha aggiunto anche categorie speciali dedicate al particolare momento storico, come Best Video From Home e Best Quarantine Performance.
